Newsletter #30: Your MMP Just Got a Vote on TikTok

By October 14, 2026No Comments

Two dashboards can disagree about one campaign, and I still have to choose a budget. TikTok made that choice a bidding input. 🧭

Signals and routes shift as TikTok accepts MMP conversions for bidding and opens off-app inventory. Meta blocks TikTok links; Apple's EU fees change the distribution math.

Creative gets quicker with Higgsfield's ad batches and Unity's editable prompt-built games. Google removes a tap from image ads, while ChatGPT tests visual placements.

Meta's Muse Wonder tackles longer AI tasks with memory across chats. I would test whether the agent keeps its bearings before handing over work.

Here's to a useful test this month and at least one dashboard that agrees with itself. ☕

Deep dive: TikTok now optimizes to your MMP: app advertisers choose the signal behind the bid

TikTok’s Attribution Source Optimization gives app advertisers a choice that has long sat at the center of UA arguments: which measurement source should its bidding system trust? In eligible Upgraded Smart+ App Promotion campaigns, advertisers can choose an MMP or TikTok’s own attribution for reporting, then specify the conversion signal the delivery model should prioritize. TikTok says the final optimization remains aligned with the selected attribution source.

That matters because a campaign can look healthy in a network dashboard while an MMP tells a different story. When bidding and business reporting use different definitions, every budget call becomes harder to defend. The new setting could narrow that gap, but it does not make attribution differences disappear. TikTok lists AppsFlyer, Adjust and Singular as current MMP options, requires an active postback integration, and says the feature may not yet be available to every advertiser.

For UA teams, the useful next step is a controlled test: check eligibility, confirm events and windows, then compare volume, cost and downstream value before shifting budget. A shared source of truth is promising; the proof is in the pudding—and the postbacks.

Apptivate: Piper Martz on the skills mobile marketers need as agents take on execution

What’s happening in the industry

Meta bans ads that send users to TikTok in seven markets

Meta has blocked ByteDance ads on its apps in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. Reuters reports the rule also covers third-party campaigns linking to TikTok or other ByteDance properties. For UA teams, the destination matters as much as the buyer: check cross-platform promotions before relying on Meta for delivery.

Higgsfield turns product pages into batches of static ads

Higgsfield Ads Studio imports a brand kit and product details from a website, then generates up to 20 static ad variations per product. The cheaper part is producing candidates, not finding winners. For UA teams, test different hooks against a baseline; a larger creative count says nothing about incremental performance.

Unity Spark makes prompt-built games editable

Unity Spark lets creators build games from prompts and refine them in an editor; access is still on a waitlist. That could cut prototype time, though Unity has not shown that it improves retention or discoverability. UA teams should watch whether quicker prototyping produces more playable concepts worth testing, rather than more launches alone.

Apple’s new EU app terms change the off-store equation

Apple’s unified EU business terms took effect October 1. A 5% commission on digital transactions in apps distributed outside the App Store replaces the per-install Core Technology Fee, while other payment and store rates also change. UA teams should recalculate acquisition economics by distribution route; old per-install assumptions no longer apply.

TikTok opens its ad network to US advertisers

TikTok is extending campaigns beyond its app through TikTok Ad Network, which it says spans nearly 400,000 apps worldwide. US advertisers can buy that inventory in TikTok Ads Manager with placement and brand-safety controls. For UA teams, separate off-platform cohorts and test incrementality before treating the new reach as equivalent to TikTok traffic.

Google removes a tap from visual ads on Shorts and Gmail

Google’s September Demand Gen update lets users reach a landing page with one tap from image ads on YouTube Shorts and Gmail. A conversational Business Agent is also available beside some YouTube ads with product feeds. For UA teams, watch qualified installs and downstream value; easier clicks alone are a weak success measure.

Meta’s Muse Wonder targets tasks that outlast one chat

Meta released Muse Wonder through its Model API and Muse Code, with Muse Wonder Full for Muse Code subscribers. Meta says Active Memory carries context across conversations and Active Focus helps agents recover from errors; broader Muse integration is still ahead. For UA teams, persistent analysis looks useful, but outputs and handoffs need scrutiny.

ChatGPT tests visual ads during image generation

OpenAI will test labeled visual ads beside image generation for US Free and Go users later this month. It has also added app attribution partners, including AppsFlyer and Adjust. For UA managers, the measurement plumbing makes a pilot feasible; compare attributed installs with incremental value before treating this as a scalable channel.
